About the Artist

Jane Clair Wilson

Jane Claire Wilson is a practice led artist creating textile based art to tell stories about places and people. The visual language of Jane's work is inspired by walking in the local community, exploring new places and conversations along the way. Jane experiments with textile properties and processes to act as visual metaphors for theories and concepts she is exploring. Jane is particularly interested in the social and political context of none places be they imaginary, abandoned, transient or in-between spaces. She is currently researching how creating a sense of displacement in a contemporary textile practice can engage makers and audiences in global discussions.

"Iteration" is a Textile Sculpture that consists of interchangeable sections that can be dismantled and rearranged in order to fit into its new environment. In 2021 I created a large textile sculpture called 'All Roads Lead to the Sea'. This was part of my research into belonging and finding my way as an artist. The visual language was inspired by a pilgrimage walk along St Hilda's Way on the North Yorkshire Moors. The sculpture is made from recycled fabrics and threads donated by people who have helped me on my creative journey. Since completion I have shared the artwork in a number of exhibitions and venues. Each time I have installed it differently in order to physically fit within the allocated space. I am currently researching how to create a sense of displacement and I am interested in the theories surrounding how people are "constantly creating and being changed by spaces and places as they are encountered" (Tim Ingold, 2016). In response to the idea of responding and adapting to new environments I have renamed my sculpture "Iteration". I would like to exhibit "Iteration" within the Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery space; allowing the new environment to dictate a new form. I am attaching a montage of photographs of the various iterations of the sculpture in different places and spaces from 2021 to 2024. I would be available to install the Sculpture as and when required.
