The image, 'Shards' captures mans impact on the landscape through the remains of a dormant slate quarry in Snowdonia. The photo demonstrates the reality and scale of the mining industry, particularly in this part of the world. Looking out towards the untouched landscape of Snowdon opposite, we see the destruction that has been caused. Yet, as I walked across these slate covered hills, camera in hand, I saw a dark beauty resonating in the landscape surrounding me and felt compelled to capture it. The now deafening silence upon these hills is a distraction from the shards of a brutal past. This particular location in North Wales conveys the feeling of absence for a population that no longer resides in this visually and politically changed Welsh environment.
